7 Exposures taken into Photomatix.  Aperture F5.6, ISO 320, Wide angle Sigma 12-24mm , Nikon D800 Road test.

After being incredibly inspired by the Miss Aniela Fashion Shoot Experience recently and also being completely obsessed by HDR photography, i wondered if you could fuse the 2 elements? The models in the wonderful costumes and the amazing locations seemed a perfect match.

Immediately i saw issues with movement between brackets, which is easily overcome by brushing through the correct (or preferred) exposure of the model with a layer mask onto the Photomatix layer in Photoshop.

I did ask the models not to move in between exposures and explained what HDR photography was, and to be fair all the girls done really well, but even a blinking eyelid will ruin the separate brackets lining up as you know.

Here are the 3 bracketed exposures i took for this shot, -2EV, 0EV, +2EV. Aperture Priority f5.6. Auto White Balance. ISO 250. Sigma 12-24mm on 24mm.

I blended them together in Photomatix as usual, but didn’t over-crank any of the sliders too much, as that type of HDR didn’t suit the feel of what i wanted to create with this image, i then used Nik Color Efex Pro 4 “Pro Contrast” plug-in to get the contrast as i wanted it, and Topaz Adjust to get some extra wall textures, then a little Glamour Glow to further enhance the light, but that was only the start of the post-processing mission!

You can see from the enlarged middle exposure image below that there were a lot of foreign objects in the shot that needed removing.

The lights, the wiring, the extension sockets, the signs from the church, the other model on the right in the background, some of the lights behind Natalia, tripods, well you get the idea, the clone stamping tools were on fire!

Next, the light rays that were created by the super talented Matt Lennard by positioning one of his new lighting rigs right behind the models head and telling her not to move, were another big player in how this shot turned out, (that and the fact that we lit several tonne of incense to create that smokey haze!) so i created a new layer in Photoshop and adjusted the brightness and contrast to the same point as the rays were and then brushed through a few times to enhance them even more, and even add a few extra ones.

I also had to brush through the +2EV exposure of Natalia’s face and then sharpen it up a bit with unsharp mask for a better effect as when i took the original 3 brackets i wasn’t quite focused as i wanted to be.

Anyway, after 3 hours of processing this is what i ended up with!
